FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Do you accept insurance or AHCCCS?

Growing Expectations Midwifery is a private, cash-pay practice. We do not bill private insurance or AHCCCS for our home-birth services. Families may use their insurance for outside services such as laboratory testing and ultrasounds when accepted by those providers. We offer payment plans to help families prepare for the cost of care.

What happens if I transfer to the hospital?

If a hospital transfer becomes necessary, I will communicate with the receiving team and provide relevant clinical information to support a smooth transition. Hospital providers will assume medical management, as I do not currently have hospital admitting privileges. When possible and appropriate, I will remain with you in a supportive role. A transfer does not mean your relationship with Growing Expectations ends; we will discuss your continuing postpartum care.

Is there a refund if birth happens in the hospital?

Every transfer situation is different. Fees for prenatal care already provided, birth attendance, and other services or commitments will be considered according to your signed care agreement. Depending on when the transfer occurs and which services have been provided, a partial refund may be available. We review these financial arrangements together before care begins, so you know what to expect.

Who attends the birth with you?

I plan to attend your birth as your Certified Nurse Midwife, with a qualified second birth attendant as part of the birth team. We will discuss your individual birth plan and confirm coverage arrangements before your birth window. Partners, doulas, and other chosen support people are welcome to participate as appropriate.

Do you offer water birth?

Yes! Growing Expectations supports laboring in water and planned water birth when clinically appropriate. An inflatable birth pool is provided around 37 weeks of pregnancy. Families purchase their required birth-supply kit separately. Water use depends on the health and safety of both mother and baby throughout labor, and circumstances may require leaving the pool.

What is the recommended distance from a hospital if needed?

Ideally, families planning a home birth should live within approximately 30 minutes of a hospital equipped to provide emergency obstetric and newborn care, although closer access is preferable. There is no single distance that determines whether a home birth is appropriate. We consider your location, anticipated travel time, access to emergency services, and individual pregnancy risk factors when developing a safe birth and hospital transfer plan. We will review these considerations during your consultation for your planned birth.

What supplies are needed for a home birth?

You will receive a detailed birth-supply list and purchase your personalized birth kit through In His Hands. This kit includes disposable and reusable items for your personal use, as well as supplies your midwife will use while caring for you and your baby. The kit typically costs between $100 and $150, depending on your preferences and needs.

Growing Expectations provides the birth pool, along with the professional medical equipment, medications, and emergency supplies needed for your birth. We will review your birth supplies and household preparations well before your due date so you feel prepared and know what to expect. Any additional medical supplies needed for your care will be provided and supplied by your midwife.

What happens if complications arise?

I monitor the wellbeing of you and your baby throughout care, recognizing concerns early whenever possible. I bring emergency medications and equipment and am trained to manage appropriate maternal and newborn emergencies in the home setting. If a complication requires hospital-level resources, I will discuss the need with you and your family and recommend prompt transfer and coordinate with emergency services and the receiving hospital as needed.

How many prenatal visits are included?

Your comprehensive maternity package includes regular in-home prenatal visits throughout pregnancy, generally every four weeks until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and weekly until birth. Visits typically last 45–60 minutes, with scheduling individualized to your clinical needs. Labor, birth, and postpartum follow-up care are also included in the full package.

Can I transfer care from another OB or midwife later in my pregnancy?

Absolutely! Growing Expectations welcomes families considering transferring care from another OB provider or midwife, even later in pregnancy. During your consultation, we will review your prenatal records, pregnancy history, and any medical concerns to determine whether home birth is a safe and appropriate option for you and your baby. Acceptance depends on your clinical needs, estimated due date, and availability. We can also discuss an individualized care plan and adjusted package pricing based on the care you have already received. My goal is to make your transition as smooth and comfortable as possible while ensuring safe, personalized care.
